Hobbit Movie Night Ideas
Hobbit Movie Night Ideas
Want to turn Hobbit movie night into a true Shire celebration? From an easy Hobbit-themed charcuterie board to setting your space with cozy lighting and scent to feel like you’re in Bag End, here’s how to recreate the feel of Bilbo’s home.

An Unexpected Party Grazing Board
Recreate the delightful chaos of Bilbo’s pantry being raided when Gandalf unexpectedly welcomes the dwarves! Use the list as your shopping list, as many of the foods can be found in the bakery section of the grocery store, or follow the links to bake an authentic Hobbit spread. An assortment of cheese, cold cuts, rustic breads, and other Shire delicacies all come together onto a charcuterie board, capturing the essence of the Unexpected Party, all in an easy-to-snack-on format.
- Seed cake
- Mini meat pies/Pork pies
- Mince pies
- Apple tart
- Raspberry jam
- Butter scones
- Cheeses
- Hard-boiled eggs
- Bread loaf
Tip: Although salad is mentioned in The Hobbit, use lettuce leaves to layer the board for color and added texture. This will also help keep the board clean from the cold meats and oils from baked goods.
Key Unexpected Party Scene Props
Welcome your guests to the warmth of a Hobbit home, where the heart of Bilbo’s home lies in his numerous pantries. Capture the coziness of the Shire by including the following props:
- Wooden platters
- Rustic wooden or stoneware bowls
- Wooden tankards
- Fresh or dried herbs
- Beeswax candles and candle holders
- Root vegetables
Bilbo’s Pantry: Trolley Centerpiece
To recreate a mini sample of Bilbo’s Pantry to style your room and set the scene, place wooden crates (you’ll find the printable label for Hamfast Gamgee right here on InLiterature!) and rustic bowls on a wooden trolley (mine is from Ikea) and fill with an assortment of root vegetables you would commonly find in England like:
- potatoes
- turnips
- apples
- nuts (walnuts, chestnuts)
- cabbage
- carrots
Team them with dried and fresh herbs like thyme, sage and rosemary. Jars of preserves can also be tucked on the shelves, but use fabric squares on top to cover the commercial lids.
Scent
Scent is one of the most under-used ways of setting a scene, and yet it’s one of the most powerful ways of transporting people to a place or memory. Here are some ways to make your room smell like The Shire:
- If you use an aroma diffuser or scented candles try oak or ash capturing the fragrance of The Old Forest near the Shire, or use pine or cedar wood.
- Cut and hang up fresh or dried herbs, such as bay leaves, sage, rosemary and thyme.
- Select beeswax candles for your table, as these would have been found in the Shire. Beeswax has a sweet honeyed scent with a touch of warmth, sometimes described as ‘sweet hay’.
Lighting
Forget artificial lights, we’re going old-school with plenty of candles.
Beeswax candles are ideal for that authentic touch, but any candles will do the trick. Once the lights go off, the movie starts, and those candles are flickering, you’ll be immersed in the perfect ambiance. Just remember to prioritize safety; keep your candle holders on the mantelpiece to avoid any screen interference, and use lanterns for added protection against accidental bumps and knocks.
Smaug’s Spicy Sprinkle Popcorn
Movie nights and popcorn go hand in hand, but using a topping to add some flavor helps ‘theme’ the popcorn. Inspired by Smaug, the mighty dragon, here is one fiery popcorn topping, ready to ignite everyone’s taste buds during your Hobbit movie night!

Smaug Scene Props
Inspired by Smaug’s hord of gold, scatter gold coins, and use metal bowls in gold, brass and silver.
Alternatively, you can take inspiration from Smaug’s deep underground location and use stone-colored bowls and rocks as your centrepiece, just as I’ve done.

Smaug’s Spicy Sprinkle Popcorn
