Favourite Foods of the Hundred Acre Wood
In the Hundred Acre Wood, adventures unfold between meals. Breakfast, lunch, tea, and “a little smackerel of something” shape the day in a world where clocks may stop, but a rumble of the tummy certainly doesn’t!
Honey
When we imagine Winnie-the-Pooh, the very next thing we picture is a pot of honey. In The House at Pooh Corner, honey appears again and again, from Pooh counting his carefully stored pots to offering it at breakfast to Tigger.
When Tigger firmly declares that Tiggers do not like honey (much to Pooh’s quiet relief), the search begins to discover what Tiggers do like.
Haycorns
As Pooh and Tigger set out through the Forest, they begin asking each friend to help Tigger find a breakfast he’ll eat. Piglet is the first to offer his own simple woodland food, haycorns (his name for acorns). Tigger gives them a hopeful try, but after a chew, declares that Tiggers do not like haycorns after all.
Thistles
Next, they visit Eeyore, who offers thistles, his usual and much-preferred meal. Tigger, convinced that thistles must be what Tiggers like best, eagerly takes a bite. But after one large crunch, Tigger quickly discovers that thistles are prickly, sharp, and, as he describes them, “hot.” In a flurry of discomfort, Tigger runs in circles, tongue out, as Pooh realises that thistles, too, need to be crossed off the list.

Condensed Milk
The search continues to Kanga’s,where we’re reminded that condensed milk is a staple in many cupboards in the Hundred Acre Wood, and one we see in other scenes in both The House at Pooh Corner and Winnie-the-Pooh, where it’s enjoyed with bread or by the spoonful. But when we visit Kanga this time, Pooh quietly removes it, suspecting it will not suit Tigger.
Extract of Malt (aka What Tiggers Like Best)
Only when Tigger impulsively samples Roo’s “Strengthening Medicine” — Extract of Malt — do they finally discover what Tiggers like best and th search finally comes to an end.
Food for Forest Adventures
In the Hundred Acre Wood, there are always adventures to be had, from nearly meeting Heffalumps to climbing trees.
Kanga, being the most sensible of them all, knows that small creatures like Roo and Tigger need something to fuel them. On one outing, she sends them off into the Forest with watercress sandwiches for Roo and extract-of-malt sandwiches for Tigger.

Gardening in The Hundred Acre Wood
(Of Haycorns and Mastershalums)
In the Hundred Acre Wood, if you plant a honeycomb, will it grow into a beehive?
If you plant a haycorn, what would appear?
Pooh and Piglet ponder such matters, particularly when Christopher Robin gives Pooh a “mastershalum” seed which Piglet timidly suggests might really be called a nasturtium. Whatever their name, Pooh is quite certain that ‘mastershalums’ will soon be growing all over the front door at Pooh Corner.
Fun Fact: Beyond the Hundred Acre Wood, nasturtiums are edible flowers you can grow in your own garden, known for their bright petals and peppery leaves, with seeds that can be pickled like capers.
